Artist's Comments

Painted from photoref in Photoshop CS4 as a character painting practice. I still find, I messed up some of her proportions ...
I was trying out a different technique using the soft brush only, going after something airbrushy.
Instead of having visible brush strokes, I tried having it rather out of focus in areas where I didn't spent efforts on details.
C&C is always welcome!
Thanks for viewing,

(excuse my bad english, I am french)When I was a child, one of my top 5 movies had Labyrinth in it. I was watching Jennifer Connelly and her attitude in the Labyrinth movie was great, I liked how she plays her emotions. After a while to repeat watching this movie, I saw her on Hulk and really liked it. In your composition we feel something different than other image of her, must be the blur around that makes it original :). Her face expression let us think that she just woke up and that her eyes is full of happiness. Very good impact!

it's hard to write a critique here since i'm a fan of her and the painting looks pretty good. i think the pros here are the lighting which you really nailed down. the shading of her face and eyes looks very good. the blur on the outside of the painting adds a nice framing. my only cons would be the overall detail. i mean it looks pretty much perfect the way it is but i have all the character paintings from these cgtalk superheroes in mind. so the overall level of detail on her hair could be improved... as well as the eyes and mouth. but it looks like you intentionally wanted to go for a dreamy look. then the overall softness works perfect. a clear fav and the wish i could nail anything character painting wise. lol well done here

Nice change having more of a soft brushing compared to your other work. :) The focus on the face compared to the rest gives it a photo effect, which works really well.

you are to good. Critiques...

Well I'm not a painting master, but I do like the blurriness to this. I kinda wish that the focal point had more sharpness like her face and eyes as the blur around the edges seems to draw you in. I think adding more edginess to the face would make this stand out much better :)

I really like the soft, blurry feel of this and it still show the details nicely! It looks like a photo with some filters applied from a foot or two away...so I say mission accomplished! Most excellent work!

I think this is great. I think you're right that it doesn't look exactly like Jennifer Connelly but other than that this is working really well. I thought the thumbnail before I clicked it was a photo with extreme shallow depth of field.

First, I thought it is Tori Amos.
Very beautiful work :)
